Cold sores are caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV-1 and HSV-2) and currently there is no cure for them, but breakouts can be managed and even avoided. Cold sores, also known as fever blisters, occur on or around the mouth and lips and appear swollen, red, and irritate the surrounding skin near the breakout.
