Wisdom Teeth Removal in Centreville, VA 20121

Your wisdom teeth are the last of your molars to erupt, usually in your late teens to early 20s. For some people, these wisdom teeth grow in without any issues. But for many people, the arrival of their wisdom teeth causes dental health problems that need intervention by a qualified dentist.

At SmileOn Dentistry in Centreville, VA, Dr. Banavar is skilled in assessing wisdom teeth in her patients. With a thorough examination and x-rays, she can determine if your wisdom teeth are currently causing problems in your mouth or if they have potential to cause problems in the future. With her expert diagnosis, Dr. Banavar will help you to determine if you should receive oral surgery for wisdom teeth removal.

What Problems Can Wisdom Teeth Cause?

Many people’s jaws are too small to accommodate the arrival of their wisdom teeth. This can lead to crowding, where your wisdom teeth push up against your other molars and force your teeth out of alignment. Crooked or misaligned teeth are more difficult to properly clean, which can increase your risk of plaque buildup, gum disease and tooth decay.

If your wisdom teeth erupt at an odd angle, or if your jaw is too small, they can actually cause damage to your other molars by pushing against them. This increases your risk of oral infection.

Many people’s wisdom teeth do not erupt fully from their gums, which is known as a partial impaction. In this situation, your wisdom teeth are harder to keep clean because food particles and bacteria can easily get trapped between your tooth and your gums. This puts partially impacted wisdom teeth at higher risk for tooth decay and gum disease.

Lastly, sometimes wisdom teeth do not erupt at all and remain trapped under the gums. This is known as a full impaction. In this situation, your wisdom teeth cannot be cleaned at all and are also at risk for gum disease and tooth decay.

Without wisdom teeth extraction, these issues can get worse over time and may lead to jawbone or nerve damage.

Early extraction is generally recommended to prevent the kind of problems that can result from an impacted tooth

What to Expect from Wisdom Teeth Extraction

Wisdom teeth removal is an outpatient oral surgery. To prepare for your surgery, you should have someone available to pick you up from our Centreville, VA office when the procedure is completed to drive you home.

Before your oral surgery, Dr. Banavar will give you an anesthetic to ensure you are comfortable throughout the procedure. This is usually a local anesthetic, which means you will be awake but unable to feel any pain. If you would prefer general anesthesia, let Dr. Banavar know at your examination appointment so she can answer your questions and advise you on the best treatment for your situation.

Once the anesthesia is working, Dr. Banavar will make an incision into your gums to expose the impacted wisdom teeth. The tooth may come out easily, or she may need to remove it in pieces. Once the tooth is fully removed, she will clean the surgery site thoroughly. You may or may not need stitches to close the incision. Lastly, Dr. Banavar will bandage the surgery site to help blood clot and promote healing.

Dr. Banavar will provide you with thorough postoperative care instructions. It is important to follow these instructions to avoid unnecessary pain or complications while your gums heal.
